Chaos in the first week of Parliament

A look at a rather eventful first week of the sixteenth term.

Chaos in the first week of Parliament

A mere one week into this term, and we have had scenes from both the Government and Opposition. We have had 11 bills so far, nine from the Government, two from the opposition. However the one thing that many people would have heard about, Questions Without Notice. The actions of many Parliamentarians was questionable, with members of both Government and Opposition being ejected, even one from each side being named by the Chair.

Most members of the opposition displayed good behaviour, with the exception of the Member for Melbourne. They had showed behaviour throughout the entire sitting that was unparliamentary. Throughout the session, the Member had received warnings all throughout, for doing things such as the cursing at the chair and shouting random things throughout the sitting, before they did the Haka, leading them to being removed and named by the chair.

The crossbench was well behaved, for what parts of it were attending. However people who run our country, the government, were by far the worst behaved people in the house at the time. The Members for Cowper, Robertson, Lingiari and Moncrieff being ejected from the house, with the Member for Cowper getting named. The members constantly interjected while others were talking, they were on their phones, allegedly on popular betting app Sportsbet. The Government frontbench were all eating Golden Gaytimes, after being given them by the Member for Cowper, which led to the chair naming the member. By the end of the sitting, the Speaker had to suspend the house, due to constistant disorder of the house, for it to be resumed at the next sitting.

On the 26th of April, the next sitting of Questions without Notice, the Members for Melbourne, Cowper, Robertson and Lingiari did not attend the session, and the Prime Minister was late. However the sitting was much more orderly, with no one being removed, and questions being asked in an orderly fashion.

The Parliament additionally had four government bills, after the earlier mentioned members did not vote, fail. This includes the Removal of GST on Electricity, A Fuel Excise Reduction, the 99c coin and an option for Parliamentary workers to opt-out of pay.
